Mission Our organization's mission aligns with that of AMCP's mission which is to empower its members to serve society by using sound medication management principles and strategies to improve health care for all. Managed care pharmacy principles are based upon the use of scientific evidence to achieve healthy outcomes, while making the best use of money spent on medications and their management. In the purest sense, all people working in healthcare can be thought of as 'managing care.'
Every day, the importance of managed care pharmacy is increasing, even more now that healthcare reform is taking place. Our student chapter seeks to enhance the professionalism of pharmacy students for the many different career options available as Managed Care Pharmacists.
History Our organization was founded on the basic desire of one student, Kenny Ng, to learn more about the available career paths for pharmacists other than community and hospital pharmacy. Once he stumbled upon AMCP's website (www.amcp.org), interest grew on the various career options Managed Care Pharmacy provided. From there, it was realized that more students should be exposed to Managed Care Pharmacy and thus began the process of setting up an AMCP student chapter at St. John's University.
Dr. Nayak was asked to be the chapter's faculty advisor along with Vincent Tao to be Vice-President to assist with the logistics of establishing our chapter. With the assistance of our e-board members and AMCP Diplomat, Dr. Craig DiNapoli, we have made and will continue to make many great strides in establishing the necessary foundation of SJU's AMCP Student Chapter to grow and have a positive influence on the pharmacy students of St. John's University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
